Malignant Skin Lesions

Dr Knox can offer you expertise in the management and treatment of surgical skin conditions, bearing in mind that not all skin lesions/concerns require surgery and may be managed with other therapies.

Why Consider Abdominoplasty?

There are several reasons why you might consider abdominoplasty:

  • Weight loss: To address sagging skin and excess fat after significant weight loss.
  • Pregnancy: To correct abdominal laxity and separation of abdominal muscles following childbirth.
  • Aging: To counteract the effects of aging, including loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone.

Benign Skin Conditions

This term covers a large number of conditions which won’t usually cause significant damage but are perhaps unsightly or causing irritation, intermittent infection, or social embarrassment.+

Benign lesions commonly include:

  • Moles, Cysts, Skin tags, sun damage and excess pigmentation, and many other less common growths

Dr Knox can discuss with the pros and cons of removal of such lesions, and the trade-off between removal and the resultant scar.

Where surgery may not be your best option, he can either offer you non-surgical alternatives.

Scars

Scars are a natural part of the healing process after an injury or surgery. However, some scars may become thick, irregular, raised, or discoloured. The development of scar tissue is influenced by various factors, including:
  • Severity of the original injury
  • Size, depth, and location of the wound
  • Hereditary factors
  • Racial background
  • Skin pigmentation
  • Surgical technique
  • Overall health, fitness, and nutrition
  • Age
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Complications during healing

Types of Problem Scars

There are several types of problem scars, including:
Hypertrophic scars
These are raised, thickened scars that remain within the boundaries of the original wound.
Keloid scars
These scars grow beyond the original wound boundary and can be firm, raised, and discoloured.
Contractures
Scars that can restrict movement due to tightening of the skin.
Facial scars
These can be particularly challenging due to their visibility. Facial scars can result from acne, trauma, or other injuries, and may pull on, and distort nearby structures such as eyelids, lips or nostrils.

Scar Treatment Options

While there's no guaranteed way to completely eliminate a scar, Dr Knox can recommend effective treatments to improve its appearance. Surgical options may include:

  • Dermabrasion: A procedure that removes layers of skin using an electrical machine
  • Laser resurfacing: A technique that uses high-energy light to target and improve scar tissue
  • Excision: Simply cutting out the scar, and re-repairing the new wound
  • Z-plasty or W-plasty: Rearranging the scar tissue to improve its appearance
  • Skin grafting or flap surgery: These procedures may be necessary for more complex scars

Malignant Skin Lesions

Australia has a high incidence of skin cancer, which is by far the most common cancer group in this country.

The most common skin cancers include:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
  • Melanoma

BCC is the most common type of skin cancer. It can have a variety of appearances from a red scaly patch to a thick ulcerated lump. Like other skin cancers, BCC is caused by UV radiation from the sun, which damages the DNA in skin cells.

SCC is the second most common skin cancer in Australia. It can be caused by exposure to certain chemicals, especially in patients with reduced immune function, but overwhelmingly the culprit is sun damage as with BCCs.

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, but it is also the least common. It can develop anywhere on the body, but is most often found on the back, chest, legs, and face. Melanoma is caused by damage to the DNA in skin cells, which can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds.

Early detection is key to successful treatment of all types of skin cancer. If you notice any changes to your skin, such as a new mole, a mole that changes in size or shape, or a sore that does not heal, see your doctor right away.

If you are seeking out Dr Knox in relation to skin cancer, he will examine the areas of concern, organise and perform diagnostic biopsies where needed, and determine the next course of action. That treatment plan may involve surgical intervention, radiation, topical therapies and/or immunotherapy.

Dr Knox will walk you through each step of the process to ensure you understand your options and to address any concerns before developing treatment plans based on the needs of the individual. He will also strive for the best aesthetic outcomes for scars, grafts, and areas requiring reconstruction.
