Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase breast volume and improve breast contour. Whether you're seeking to improve your natural breasts or restore symmetry after a mastectomy, Dr Knox can help you with your desired results.

Why Consider Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation can be a solution for women who:

  • Feel their breasts are too small or underdeveloped
  • Desire a more balanced breast appearance
  • Need breast reconstruction following a mastectomy

The Breast Augmentation Process

Dr Knox will assess your goals, medical history, and breast anatomy to determine the most suitable breast augmentation technique. Factors such as your desired breast size, shape, sporting/leisue activities and overall body proportions will influence the surgical plan.

Breast augmentation can be performed on a day surgery basis or may require a short hospital stay. The incisions are typically placed in the crease below the breast.

Recovery and Results

After surgery, you may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Pain relief medication will be provided to manage any pain. Incisions normally heal within 7-10 days, but wounds take several weeks to be strong, so you may need to modify your activity levels during this time.

The results of breast augmentation are long-lasting, providing a significant improvement in breast size and shape. Remember that breasts change over time in terms of volume, firmness and position, with or without an underlying implant.

Breast Asymmetry

Are you concerned about uneven breasts? Breast asymmetry correction surgery can help improve balance and harmony of your breast. Dr Knox offers personalised solutions tailored to your individual needs.

Understanding Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry occurs when one breast is significantly larger or smaller than the other. This can affect a woman's self-esteem and body image. Breast asymmetry correction surgery involves adjusting the size and shape of one or both breasts to create a more symmetrical appearance. It is important to remember that this operation offers an improvement in symmetry, and while the goal is to make your breasts look the same, this is not an outcome that can be promised. ‘Similar’ rather than ‘the same’ is perhaps a more realistic expectation both in the short and longer term.

The Surgical Process

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and can take up to two hours, depending on the complexity of the case. Dr Knox will carefully assess your breast anatomy, desired outcome, and overall health to determine the most appropriate surgical technique.

Possible procedures may include:

Breast Augmentation
Increasing the size of one or both breasts using implants.
Breast Reduction
Reducing the size of one or both breasts.
Breast Lift
Addressing sagging or drooping breasts.
The goal is to create a balanced and natural appearance that complements your body type.

Recovery and Results

Most patients will be asked to stay in the hospital overnight for observation. Post-operative care is essential for optimal healing, so please follow the instructions provided by Dr Knox.

The results of breast asymmetry correction surgery are long-lasting, providing a significant improvement in your breast appearance. As with augmentation, remember that breasts change over time in terms of volume, firmness and position, with or without an underlying implant.

Breast Lift and Breast Reduction

Breast lift and breast reduction are surgical procedures that can change breast appearance and create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing shape. While both involve reshaping the breast, they address different concerns.

Breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is ideal for women who are satisfied with their breast size but are troubled by sagging or loss of firmness. This procedure involves repositioning the breasts, removing excess skin, and tightening the surrounding tissue to create a more youthful and lifted appearance.

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is recommended for women experiencing physical discomfort due to excessively large breasts. This procedure involves reducing breast size by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin. Breast reduction can alleviate back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as improve posture and mobility.

Understanding Your Options

Choosing the right procedure is essential for achieving your desired outcome. Dr Knox will conduct a thorough consultation to discuss your goals, concerns, and medical history.

During this consultation, he will:

  • Explain the benefits and limitations of breast lift or breast reduction.
  • Assess your breast.
  • Create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

Recovery and Results

Following surgery, your breasts may initially feel firm and appear higher on your chest. Swelling and bruising will gradually subside within the first few weeks, but it may take several months for your breasts to fully settle into their new shape and position.

Regular post-operative consultations with Dr Knox allow him to monitor your healing progress and ensure that you are achieving your desired aesthetic results.

Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue and is colloquially referred to as “man boobs”. It can affect one or both breasts. This condition may resolve naturally throughout adolescence. However the likelihood of enlarged male breasts resolving as an adult is reduced and to achieve a contoured chest may require surgery to eliminate extra tissue.

This is a condition that can cause embarrassment and physical discomfort to teenage boys and men. There may be a non-surgical solution and your initial consultation and assessment with Dr Knox is aimed at tailoring treatment for your specific condition. We liase with endocrinology colleagues where an hormonal imbalance is a likely contributing factor.

Research shows there are a number of potential causes of gynaecomastia including:

  • Imbalance of testosterone and oestrogen hormones
  • Thyroid, kidney and liver disorders
  • Prescription medications taken for other health problems
  • Recreational drugs and steroids
Note that except in unusual circumstances, if you are taking anabolic steroids or similar ‘body building’ hormonal supplements then surgery is unlikely to be a solution. The same can be said if you plan to take or resume such medication after surgery.

If the cause of the gynaecomastia cannot be confirmed or the enlarged breast tissue doesn’t resolve even after eliminating some medications or treating an underlying disorder, surgery will likely be recommended as the pathway to achieve the desired contoured look.

At the time of consultation Dr Knox will perform an examination and explain your options. He may request further tests such as a mammogram or ultrasound. If surgery is agreed upon then a discussion on optimal timing, realistic expectations, preparation for the surgical procedure, hospital stay and recovery process will be discussed.

Photographs will be taken to help in the discussion of the issues and discussed before you make your surgical decision.

It is important to understand that a healthy lifestyle is critical for a good surgical outcome. The use of recreational drugs and steroids will comprise the surgery. Do not proceed to surgery if you intend to continue with these activities.

Dr Knox performs a gynaecomastia using a combination of liposuction and /or surgical breast reduction. This will be fully explained during your consultation.

The operation typically requires a general anaesthetic and a night in hospital.

A support garment that minimises swelling and aids the healing process will usually be applied at the completion of your surgery.

Regular activities can be resumed in 1-2 weeks depending on Dr Knox’s instructions with more vigorous exercise like the gym, particularly routines or work activities which target the chest muscles, postponed for 3-4 weeks post surgery.

Post surgery visits will be scheduled to review the wounds and remove sutures, although mostly these are internal to minimise external marks.

Removal of Implants

While many women have had breast implants for years without significant issues, it is  important to understand that implants are generally not a permanent solution. Surgical removal, with or without replacement, may become necessary due to various factors.

Why Consider Removal of Implants?

Aging and Wear and Tear
Over time, implants can naturally degrade.
Medical Concerns
Certain medical conditions or changes may necessitate implant removal.
Personal Preference
You may decide to have your implants removed for aesthetic or personal reasons.

Potential Complications of Leaving Implants in Place

Although breast implants are often safe and effective, a small percentage of women may encounter complications. These include:

  • Capsule Contracture: This occurs when the capsule of scar tissue surrounding the implant becomes too tight, causing the breast to feel hard, lumpy or misshapen.
  • Implant Rupture: Implants can rupture, releasing silicone or saline into the surrounding tissue.
  • Implant Migration or Infection
  • Late Seroma formation: Where an expanding collection of fluid develops around the implant.
  • Psychological Distress: In some cases, women may feel psychologically uncomfortable or distressed with their implants.

With 30 years of experience in breast surgery, Dr Knox aims to provides safe and effective advice and, if necessary surgery for breast implant procedures. The goal of our practice is to guide you safely through your surgical journey, ensuring you are informed of the benefits and risks whichever pathway you select.

Prior to your consultation you may wish to consider some of the relevant issues that will influence your treatment plan:

  • Are you seeking implant removal, replacement, removal and replacement and simultaneous breast lift?
  • If you are considering removal, and replacement, do you want to adjust the size, shape or type of your implant?
  • Have you had an Ultrasound and or mammogram within the last 12 months and if so, do you have your report or recall where your screening was done?
